Mentoring honorary YMT members

I went to Griffeen Valley Educate Together National School last week to help out with an App Inventor workshop that Natasha Kiely was giving to Bianca Ní Ghrógáin’s 4th class. While I was there, Bianca asked me to talk through what we do in YMT, with three of the lads in the class. Sam, Liam and Tyrese were interested in interviewing and other aspects of what we do so I showed them how we plan for our interviews, record and publish them.   I was their first guinea pig. Check out our interview!

Interview with Leanne Lynch

While in the Convent Primary in Nenagh today, for the Skype call with Chris Hadfield, I got to interview Leanne Lynch, the teacher who organised the call.  Leanne told me about how she set up the call by contacting him on his website.  She also spoke about the preparation the class did for the call.  They have been working on the theme of space for the last 5-6 weeks and have been in contact with other people such as Dr. Max Bernstein from NASA, Professor Peter Gallagher from Trinity College and Frances McCarthy from CIT and Blackrock Observatory in Cork.

Skype with Commander Chris Hadfield

I got a chance to go to my sister’s school to be part of a skype with Commander Chris Hadfield, an astronaut on the International Space Station.  It was a very inspirational call with Chris sharing what got him interested in space (the moon landing he saw at age 9 in 1969), the experiments he did on the Space Station and what day to day life was like in space.

He came across as a very nice man who took a lot of time to answer the questions that the girls had prepared for him.  He knows a lot about Ireland because his daughter is studying at Trinity College.  He mentioned that  he loved seeing the green of Ireland as he came across the Atlantic on his 16 orbits of the planet every day.

Excited IRL YMT

After two days of producing audio interviews, video footage, still imagery and blog posts, five members of the Youth Media Team join Conor Galvin and Bernie Goldbach in a conversation that reveals part of the inside story of their production skills.

It’s important to know that these secondary school students have developed production values as high as many teachers attending the Excited Education Conference. The production workbook being developed by Finn Briody as an ePub will feature in a working group session conducted by Bernie Goldbach at the e-learning summer school in the Dublin Institute of Technology in June 2014. The #elss14 session will discuss fundamental elements of multimedia storytelling by secondary school students. Specific emphasis will focus on capturing the narrative value of media text.
