Caitlin and Christopher interviewed Dr. Steve Bunce.
Dr Steve Bunce is an experienced teacher and has taught in primary, middle and secondary schools and covered many roles including ICT co-ordinator, head of year and senior leader. Developing teaching and learning in schools is the focus of Steve’s work and he now advises teachers in computing and using iPads to impact upon learning.
We talked about his involvement with with Makey-Makey and why he is in attendance at ICTedu today.He told us how he is enjoying todays conference and how learning from other teachers is one of his highlights.

Caitlin and Jack interviewed Paschal Meehan.Paschal is Head of Faculty of Applied Science,Engineering & Technology(ASET) at LIT and a member of the Governing Council of the Institute. He was at ICTedu to help launch the conference and very kindly took time-out to speak to us on the YMT.

We talked to Paschal about how he uses technology and how important programming is in schools. According to Paschal it should be a subject of its own and every teacher should be familiar with it. Paschal is enjoying all the stands and key note speakers.

Jack and Christopher interviewed Sabine McKenna , a minecraft expert. We discussed the importance of technology in classrooms. Sabine told us about the possibilities when using minecraft in classrooms. You can use Minecraft for Maths, English and History and so much more. She believes programming is a necessity in Ireland because it is the future.

Jack and Christopher’s interview with Ken McGrath -Eircom

For this interview we were brought to a private room or as Ken McGrath called it The Pod it was like a really small conference room stuffed with technology!.

Ken is responsible for the delivery of Eircom services to schools across Ireland (therefore he is extremely busy today!) He got excited after the #EXCITED event in Dublin Castle at the start of the year, he was more than happy to offer the facility to a similar event. He is a great advocate of learning through technology and believes it is the only way forward!

Jack and Christopher’s interview with Minister Damien English.

In this interview we talked with Minister Damien English about his new role as a junior minister in the Department of Education & Skills, and before that on his work in the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. In the interview we talked about Mathletes in education in Ireland and the importance of education through technology.

The Minister was here today to open the Mathletes event.

Although he was from Meath he seemed sound enough! 🙂

Interview with Jan Muehlfeit

Here Finn interviews Jan Muehlfeit Chairman of Microsoft Europe. Jan speaks about his involvement at the highest levels in advising and guiding on technology usage. He also talks about his career with Microsoft and why he sees technology as an important part of the future for both teaching and learning. He had come to the Khan Academy event today to participate in a panel on the ideas of how platforms like the Khan Academy can help with literacy, mathematics, and future jobs.

This was the first time Mr Muehlfeit met the youth media team. He invited us to visit their headoffice in Brussels if we ever go there to cover an event!

Up The Premier!

We went along to Semple Stadium last night for the Tipperary Senior Hurling training session before the All Ireland Final.  When we were there we got a chance to interview Johnny B, the man behind the official Tipperary song, ‘This Could Be Our Year’.

We also got to chat to locals John Kennedy and Paddy Moore about their predictions for ‘Hurler of the Year’ and the result of Sunday’s game among other things.

 

 

Jack and Donal’s interview with Doug Frankish.

We sat in on the ignite session with Ashley Hufnagel, Marcie Lewis, Natasha Smith and Doug Frankish! An ignite presentation is where the talker has only five minutes to get through 20 slides. The slide move along automatically after 15 seconds. This provides a more interesting and punctual presentation!

The first person to speak was Marcie Lewis about Coding. Second up was Natasha Smith. Third was Ashley Hufnagel and last but not least, our interviewee Doug Frankish!

In our interview we talked to Doug about Mystery Skype and how it can be used in classrooms across the world. Once you are paired up with your mystery classroom it is the classes job to try to figure out where the other participating class is from using only yes or no questions!
